The Edwards Aquifer: Understand, Conserve, Protect

This middle school instructional program is designed to engage students in learning about the Edwards Aquifer system, water conservation, and the importance of the aquifer as our region’s primary water resource. Program materials include a teacher’s guide and full-color student books containing photos, illustrations, diagrams, maps and charts. The teacher’s guide offers chapter discussion questions, student activities with TEKS correlations, chapter quizzes, and program assessments.

The Edwards Aquifer Region Wall Map

Recommended for grades 6-adult) This bold 22”x34” wall map includes a graphic representation of the Edwards Aquifer region, a generalized north-south cross section of the system, and an explanation of how the aquifer system works.

The Edwards Aquifer: A Texas Treasure Video

(Recommended for grades 6-adult) An entertaining and informative viewpoint highlighting the value of the Edwards Aquifer. The aquifer’s geological make-up, size, location, manner of recharging, threats of depletion, and pollution are discussed. 19 mins.

School Group Presentation: Edwards Aquifer 101

(Recommended for grades 6 – 8) This 20-minute program allows students to learn more about the geology of the aquifer and important issues such as water conservation and pollution prevention. Geological make-up, size, location, manner of recharging, discharging, and endangered species are discussed, leading participants on a journey through the Edwards Aquifer system. A 3-D groundwater simulator provides students with a unique opportunity to see “inside” the aquifer. Dye injected into the model allows participants to view groundwater flow and brings the aquifer to life.

The Threatened and Endangered Plant and Animal Species of the Edwards Aquifer

(Recommended for grades 8-adult) This fact-filled book offers a look at all the threatened or endangered species of the Edwards Aquifer ecosystem. A description of each species and their habitat, as well as, photographs and references for further reading are included.

The Edwards Aquifer Conservation Water Wheel

(Recommended for grades 4-adult) This interactive resource describes ways to save water in and around the home. Turn the wheel to discover conservation tips for the kitchen, bath tub, toilet, garden hose, and much more.

Junior Girl Scout Program

Junior Girl Scouts are invited to learn more about the Edwards Aquifer while hiking through scenic Eisenhower Park in Bexar County. This program is offered bi-annually in partnership with the Girl Scouts of the San Antonio Area. The two-mile hike, led by Authority staff, allows Junior Girl Scouts to observe all three parts of the Edwards Aquifer system: the drainage area, the recharge zone, and the artesian zone plus enjoy a spectacular view of the Texas Hill Country and the San Antonio skyline. Each Girl Scout receives the Edwards Aquifer Awareness Patch and water conservation materials. Cub Scout Program

This two-hour interactive program, teaches Cub Scouts about the Edwards Aquifer system and awards a Science Academics Belt Loop. The program is offered bi-annually in partnership with the Witte Museum. It includes lively discussion on the scientific method, a hands-on, discovery scientific experiment, an interview with an Authority scientist, and a visit to the Edwards Aquifer Simulation Theater, a permanent exhibit at the Witte Museum. In addition to the Science Academics Belt Loop, each Cub Scout receives a certificate of completion, Edwards Aquifer educational materials, and water conservation items.
