The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) has designated eight species that live in the Edwards Aquifer, the San Marcos Springs, and the Comal Springs aquatic ecosystems as either threatened, endangered or petitioned. A federally listed species is classified as endangered if it is considered to be at immediate risk of extinction and threatened if it is considered to be at risk of extinction in the foreseeable future. A species classified as petitioned has been brought to the attention of the USFWS for consideration for listing as a federally protected species.
