Welcome to the Learning Zone!

We created these portals to be used in shorter, more flexible settings. They have ties to the larger project-based learned curriculum experience of the Edwards Aquifer Authority Education Outreach Center, but these activities require less time and preparation.

Here you will find hands-on, experiential learning portals designed with multiple ways to learn and get excited about the story of the Edwards Aquifer and all of its ecosystems.

WATCH: The Contributing Zone (1:01)

The source of our water in South Central Texas, the Edwards Aquifer, has an entire zone where water seeps and drains into the ground. One of the three zones that form our aquifer is the Contributing Zone. Every day we make choices. We can choose to make our world better and protect our aquifer.

Vocabulary

Artesian Zone

The section of the Edwards Aquifer where the water pressure brings water to the surface naturally in springs and some wells.

Contributing Zone

Also called the Drainage Zone, the watersheds in this area drain into streams or areas where water is quickly absorbed into the Edwards Aquifer.

Recharge Zone

The part of the Edwards Aquifer with sinkholes and fractures where rainwater easily enters and refills the aquifer.

Groundwater

Water that is stored underneath the earth’s surface.

Aquifer

An underground resource of water, like the Edwards Aquifer in South Texas.
